Resume Tips

Resume! Simple term but often misinterpreted in to writing documents that fail to impress.

Ideally a Resume acts as a self-promotional document that is meant to present you in the spotlight, for the sole purpose of getting the much needed job interview call. It is a known fact that your Resume can either get you the job or then stop a very tempting job offer from coming your way. Hence, this being an important document should be treated with utmost care while drafting a final format. Everything mentioned on your Resume should hold weightage as regards the points mentioned and the authenticity of the information. Bear in mind, that your resume is not a confessional document or a piece of paper that talks of your previous company. Your Resume should talk only about you.

Points to note:

1. Do not push in all data on to the paper, allow enough white paper space to the reader.

2. Try and keep your Resume restricted to one page, whenever applicable.

3. Print on one side of the paper only, to make it look neat.

4. Ensure that your correspondence details are mentioned clearly on the top of the page. Ideally in bold fonts, complete with the postal address, mobile numbers.

5. Always use not more than 2 fonts in your Resume that can be read with ease.

6. Avoid making spelling mistakes, do not use words that you are not familiar with.

7. Ask a friend to proof read your Resume, to ensure that the document is correct and complete in every way.

8. Do not circulate second or third generation photocopies of your Resume to your prospective employers.

9. Always perform a spell check before drafting the final copy of your Resume to the employers.

10.Use good quality paper for printing your Resume, using a white or cream paper base.

What should be done?

Always remember that your Resume needs to promote you in an impressive way. When you go for an interview no matter how smart you look or dress, what really matters is how your first draft appears. Do not boast of your credentials in an unprofessional manner, let your interviewer see your skill sets through the work you have handled so far. Avoid using words like ' I accomplished' or 'I was', use more action verbs like 'Managed to' sounding more effective and compelling. Do not indulge in falsifying acts instead look at ways to verify your accomplishments, that you must truthfully state. If you have a good line up of experience, then ensure you mention it, complete with project information. Never forget to mention your job objective, this will help your employer know how serious you are creating a stronger impact.
